Kathryn S.E. Cheah

Kathryn S.E. Cheah is Chair Professor of Biochemistry and Head of Department of Biochemistry since 1997 at The University of Hong Kong.  Her university education was obtained in the UK, at University of London, and the University of Cambridge. After postdoctoral research in the University of Manchester and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London, she joined the University of Hong Kong in 1983.  She is the founding President of Hong Kong Society for Developmental Biology and was the President of the International Society for Matrix Biology 2006-2008. She also represents Hong Kong in the Asia Pacific Developmental Biology Network.  Her major research interests are in developmental biology, functional genomics and human genetics, with emphasis on the mouse and human. Current research is focused on understanding genes and molecular mechanisms in development especially in chondrogenesis and development of the inner ear and heart and also in inherited and degenerative skeletal disorders. She collaborates with many scientists around the world and actively promotes public understanding of science in the region.
